In 2016, we had the incredible opportunity to visit the ancient ruins of Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage site that had long fascinated us. As we walked through the cobbled streets, it felt like stepping back in time, immersing ourselves in the daily life of a city frozen in time by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
The ruins revealed the well-preserved remains of homes, shops, and public spaces, giving us a glimpse into the sophisticated urban planning and culture of the Roman Empire. We were particularly struck by the detailed frescoes and mosaics, the amphitheater, and the famous plaster casts of the victims, which brought the tragedy to life in a hauntingly vivid way.
The experience was both awe-inspiring and humbling, reminding us of the fragility of life and the powerful forces of nature that shaped history. Pompeii remains one of the most memorable journeys we’ve ever taken.
